He later served as a customs broker, customs inspector, and chairman of the Board of Examiners of the Civil Service Customs House in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of Civil War letters written by Fenton while serving with the 6th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry; 2 scrapbooks of reunion records (ca. 1884) of the 6th Ohio Cavalry Veterans Association; and scrapbooks of letters and newspaper clippings relating to Fenton's career in customs administration, his relations with Charles F.
